The phenomenon-based learning (PhBL) is a learner-centered instructional approach that is based on student inquiry and problem-solving. Teachers act as guides as learners explore and make sense of intriguing phenomena while using scientific practices in a social setting. By the end of the 4th session, teachers will have a fleshed-out plan for implementing PhBL in their classrooms.

Day 1: What is Phenomena-based Learning and how does it encourage Authentic Scientific-inquiry?
In this session, participants will explore the value of using PhBL to engage students in authentic scientific exploration and begin constructing their own Phenomenon-based learning unit.

Day 2: Backwards Design and Phenomena-based Learning
Teachers will analyze existing lesson plans and using a backwards design process, they will create an assessment plan and a sequence of possible student tasks based on a chosen phenomena.

Text structures are used to organize any text regardless of genre and they are fundamental in script writing and storyboarding. In this session, we will analyze a variety of texts and identify the signal words of each structure. We will then discuss how to implement the Text Structure Strategy (TSS) in the classroom to engage students in thinking, planning, and creating powerful messages for podcasts and videos.
